“Still Green”

I plan to start taking some 'green' fishing trips this next summer.

I live in a relatively large city, and generally fish tailwater that runs just north and west of the city. I started thinking that some of the sections I frequent (in National Recreation Areas) would be reasonably accessible via public transit, with 'first and last mile' transit connectivity provided by... my bike.

That's being green!

Traveling by bike and public transit means I need to keep my gear small and light. That means the best time to try this is in the summer, when I can wet wade in the frigid water without freezing, thereby eliminating the need for traveling with bulky waders.

Further, because the section I will be accessing is sufficiently downstream enough from the striated and slippery boulders of the dam (which creates this tailwater), I can probably get away with merely Chacos (TM), eliminating the need for bulky wading boots. The river rocks here are covered in enough vegetation and sand to provide the rubber bottoms of sandals with something sufficient to grip to, without busting your *arse*. (Also, this only works because it's summer and I'll be warm enough.)

I can also get away with wearing Chacos for the bike riding section as displayed by my brother-in-law's lovely wife on their bike ride from Pennsylvania to Georgia a few weeks back.

Chacos it is

Currently I only have two-piece rods, which when broken down are longer-than-ideal for this type of thing, in my opinion. At the end of the month I plan on getting a 4-piece nymphing rod. But I also plan on going out to Idaho before then, and won't need the nymphing rod for that...

Screw it I'm just going to buy one of these cheap 'tenkara style' rods, and have a go at it.

Then I'll be traveling light and fast, powered by a 750 V DC electrified, air-conditioned, passenger car on a steel-wheel train, at speeds up to 70 mph and... my bike.

Add chacos, a few flies, and the long rod.

Hold the waders.

("Air conditioned" is more than I can say for my truck right now.)
